Lava Lamp Science Experiment

We’ve been conducting a variety of science-based experiments in the course of our education. The lava-lamp experiment is amazing!

This activity requires supervision by an adult. It is vital to watch your child at all times. Your child must never take anything in their mouths.

If they continue to do so do not repeat the experiment.

My kids had a great time with this. We’ve tried it several times using different shades. The children have always been amazed. They are fascinated by toys for an extended period.

Lava Lamp Experiment

Materials required:

  • Vegetable Oil
  • Water
  • Food coloring – primary colors, or neon
  • Original Alka Seltzer tablets

Food color can be used to tint approximately 1/2 cup of water. Gel food colors can be used to create vibrant colors.

Break the Alka Seltzer tablet into two or three pieces. Put them in a cup or smaller container.

The glass should be filled to 3/4 full with vegetable oil. Pour colored water up to 2 inches above liquid level.

You don’t need it to overflow. You shouldn’t attempt to make it an explosive test unless you really desire to. This is the reason I prefer to conduct the experiment on an unfinished tray. The cleanup is also very fast.

Add the Alka Seltzer tablet to the cup. Children should not ever put the tablet into their mouths.

Why This Science Experiment works

Food coloring that is water-soluble prevents the water from mixing with the oil. It also stops the color of the oil from changing. Alka Seltzer reacts to the water and creates carbon dioxide bubbles.

Bubbles stick to colored water in blobs, then they lift them to the top. If the bubbles explode the colored water blobs sink to the bottom of the.
